Safe Call Guidelines

The following set of guidelines are suggested to be used when you are acting as a safe call for someone. It is both an honor, and a responsibility not to be taken lightly. You could be the very lifeline for this individual. If you do not adopt these particular guidelines, that what ever ones you do, stick to them and allow no exception or variance.

Get the following information:
  1. Both persons names, addresses and phone numbers.
  2. If possible get a picture of both parties.
  3. If possible get both drivers license numbers.
  4. Both places of employment.
  5. How they will arrive, where they will meet, where they are going. A complete itinerary with a phone number you can call back to verify everything is ok.
  6. Preset times for them to call in a minimum of two times the first day, and it is suggested twice each day after that at different times. It is also suggested that the safe call person calls back to the phone number to make sure they are where they are supposed to be.
  7. Set code words or phrases i.e. "The dog is doing ok" meaning everything is good. "They say the dog is sick?" means things are not going well. "Take the dog to the vet" means I need help get me out of here ASAP! This could be what ever the person requesting the safe call and the safe call person set up.
  8. If the safe call requester needs assistance CALL 911 - DO NOT attempt to rescue someone by yourself! If possible meet both the safe call requester and their prospective date/partner in a group setting i.e... a public restaurant for coffee with two or more people that YOU know. This way you can give an accurate description if needed. (Never put yourself in danger or attempt to meet someone alone!.)
  9. Insist that the safe call requester follows every rule you set. Inform them that if they do in fact deviate from the itinerary you will inform the local authorities immediately. Insist that all timelines be met.
  10. You are the safe call person. Consider your own safety first! Never place yourself in harm's way or attempt a rescue alone. If you feel the need to contact local authorities do so immediately. If your safe call requester does not follow through, assume the worst and call the local authorities. Take the responsibility to heart - you could be someone's lifeline.
  11. Do not accept a safe call request if you do not feel comfortable about it or if the requestor does not wish to conform to the rules.
  12. Call and verify employment, check phone listings for phone numbers given and look up the addresses. If you do not know how ask someone that does - it is quite easy to verify this information.

As a safe call person you do not have to give out personal information you do not feel comfortable about giving. Simple fact: if it does not feel right DON'T DO IT!

REMEMBER your safety comes first and take no excuses from your safe call requester.
